Glen Hansard played Ashes to Ashes for fans outside David Bowie's New York home

Bowie’s New York apartment building has been transformed into a makeshift memorial for the star.

DAVID BOWIE FANS have been gathering outside the late singer’s New York apartment over the past few days, leaving flowers, pictures, and handwritten tributes.

On Tuesday night, they were joined by our very own Glen Hansard, who performed a powerful acoustic version of Ashes to Ashes for the mourners.

He told Rolling Stone magazine that he “felt the need like everyone else who was drawn toward somewhere to grieve”.

I just wanted to sing his song there… I didn’t look anyone in the eye, I couldn’t. The honesty of the second verse of the song has always moved me deeply. Bowie was the one we chose to raise us in our rooms, when we first closed the door on our parents and the world.

“He told us we could be strange, and even celebrate it,” Hansard continued. “He was so much more than his music.”
